Cream and terracotta on one side, soft sage green on the other, and the same flowers running through both. Turn it over when the room needs changing and you have a different blanket on the bed.

A patterned throw is usually a commitment. It suits the room you have today, then the cushions change or the light does, and it spends the next two winters folded in a cupboard because there is nothing left that it goes with. This one has a second answer built into it.

Both sides are the front

One face is a warm cream ground with the flowers picked out in terracotta, mustard, soft blue and sage green. The other is that same drawing on a green ground, with the colors traded around, so the leaves that read pale on one side read dark on the other. Neither of them is a lining and neither is the back.

What that gives you in practice is two rooms out of one blanket. Cream side up, it warms a pale bed and reads as the quiet thing in the room. Green side up, it drops the whole scheme a few shades and holds its own against oak and rattan. Fold the top edge back over itself and both faces sit in the same picture. That is how it looks best on a made bed.

The flowers are woven in, not printed on

A printed throw is a plain cloth with pigment laid across one face of it. That is why the back of a printed blanket is white, and why the design sits on the surface rather than in it. Turn this one over and the flowers are still there, which is the whole proof: they are made of colored yarn interlaced through the cloth, not ink resting on top of it.

You can feel it as well as see it. The woven motifs sit very slightly proud of the ground, so running a hand across the cloth you find the flowers before you find the flat. Color fastness is rated grade four. The color has nowhere to rub off from, because it is the thread and not a coating on the thread.

Light for spring, layered enough for the end of autumn

This is cotton gauze in several layers rather than one solid cloth, so what keeps you warm is the air held between the layers and not the thickness of the fabric. It is the reason it can be this light and still be worth pulling up. Cotton also lets moisture through instead of holding it against you, so you do not wake up warm and damp the way you do under fleece.

It goes across the end of a made bed, over the back of a sofa, or around your shoulders in a chair by a window. It packs down small enough to take with you, and it is made to travel. Cotton is easier about grass and sand than anything with a pile.

Which of the three sizes to pick

Small is the one-person size. It works across a reading chair, over the arm of a sofa, or folded at the foot of a bed where it lives until somebody gets cold.

Medium covers a double bed at full width with an overhang down each side, and it is the one to choose if it is going to be the blanket you actually sleep under. Large is the one for a king, where it reaches properly down both sides instead of stopping short, and it is the size to pick if two of you pull.

Then it is only a question of which way up you want the room.

Hand wash it in cool water, on its own.
